Segregated Troop Regiments of WWII
33 mins | 1943-1946

Synopsis

During the Second World War, Americans of all races and ethnicities volunteered to serve in the US Military at a time when “separate but equal” was the prevailing sentiment in many regions of the country. In addition to the universal challenges that confronted all servicemen, soldiers of color faced the additional burden of overcoming racism in the military institutions. The valor and sacrifice of these men who served is undisputed, as are their many accomplishments in the battlefield. However, these segregated regiments possess a complicated legacy that deserves further interrogation amid our country's current reckoning related to racial justice. This program presents a collection of US military propaganda and newsreels that explore the heroic exploits of the African American pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen and all Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
